In its latest Webmaster Central blog post Google explain how they approach site performance and the steps you can take to diagnose issues effecting the performance of your website.

The Google video highlights the importance of fast site speed in increasing conversions, user satisfaction and decreasing website operating costs - the consequence of slow site speed being user dissatisfaction and lasting effects. The effect of site speed on Google search engine ranking is also covered.
