AP announce a new partnership with AppDynamics
Application Performance Ltd (UK), are pleased to announce a new partnership with AppDynamics, the next-generation Application Performance Management (APM) Company.
AP has a long history working with APM technologies for Java and .NET applications. First generation products like CA Wily pioneered byte-code injection in order to instrument the application and gave companies a new way to look inside the JVM or CLR to see which methods were consuming the most time. Whilst these products remain able to solve certain performance problems in the Java or .NET tiers their abilities become limited when faced with the rapidly changing and complex distributed nature of today's applications.
Why do AP think AppDynamics is different?
Why is AppDynamics a good fit for AP?
About AppDynamics
AppDynamics is a next-generation Application Performance Management (APM) company that delivers rapid problem resolution for highly distributed applications through easy-to-use transaction flow monitoring and deep diagnostics. Unlike other APM providers, AppDynamics finds the root cause of performance problems without introducing excess overhead or requiring a complex and costly installation. AppDynamics is also the first APM provider to dynamically scale applications in cloud and virtual environments. The company was recently recognized as a Gartner Cool Vendor in IT Operations Management. For more information, visit http://www.appdynamics.com.
About Application Performance Ltd
Application Performance is focused on helping customers improve the performance of business critical applications through all stages of their development, testing and production usage. We have been helping major corporations for over 12 years in all areas of performance. Our DBTuna solution (www.dbtuna.com) for Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL and Sybase database monitoring and tuning was developed in response to customer requests for functionality not available in any other tool and is currently used on some of the largest databases in the world. Our WebTuna solution (www.webtuna.com) is an on-demand service for alerting and monitoring the performance of your internet or intranet sites and applications. WebTuna monitors the real user experience (not synthetic HTTP or ping response times) for every page view from every visitor to your site and is offered as a fully hosted Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) solution. "If you were to imagine a next generation APM solution to address all the limitations of first generation products, then AppDynamics would be it." Mick McGuinness - Senior consultant AP
Why do AP think AppDynamics is different?
- Rapid install and configuration - AppDynamics will instrument your application automatically giving you enough visibility to see the root cause of any performance problems but without you having to spend time defining exactly what you want to measure. With older technologies you would often spend a huge amount of time refining your instrumentation rules then testing and retesting before finally deploying to production, only then to find out that the next performance problem you hit was in a method which you hadn't instrumented.
- Guaranteed Low Overhead - AppDynamics will instrument your application automatically meaning you don't have to worry about manually choosing exactly which methods to instrument or the risk that you may instrument too much. In the past it wasn't uncommon to hear that it was actually the monitoring tool which would kill the application performance. AppDynamics will maintain an overhead of less than 2% so there is no risk the monitor becoming the bottleneck.
- Business transaction focussed - AppDynamics will automatically identify the business transactions in your application based on standard entry points like Servlet, Struts actions, web service calls etc. That means that all data is presented in the context of a business transaction which is meaningful to the business and not just a set of Java method which only make sense to the person who developed them.
- Cross tier support - AppDynamics will follow the business transactions across the different tiers by decorating the protocol headers and passing a ‘transaction Id' which can be used to create a single call graph for a business transaction spanning many tiers.
- Scalable architecture - AppDynamics ‘sees' the response of every business transaction and the call graph spanning multiple tiers. However, in order to remain scalable it aggregates the data into 1 minute time slices first and intelligently only sends the call graph information for certain transactions. This is based on a configurable set of rules that allow you to save a sample of the call graph for each business transaction periodically and additionally collect more samples when response time thresholds are breached.
- Presentation of information - AppDynamics has a slick browser based GUI built on Adobe Flex technology which allows role based access to your different applications. The automatically discovered topology views lets you see out-of-the-box how your business transactions are flowing across the different tiers and where the time is being spent.
Why is AppDynamics a good fit for AP?
- We are always looking for the best APM solution in each technology area and currently for Java applications that is AppDynamics
- It is a great fit with our WebTuna and DBTuna solutions which sit either side of AppDynamics to give an end-to-end view. WebTuna provides end user response time measured from the end users browser which can be tied to the business transaction in AppDynamics. The business transaction may then make a SQL call to a database which can be diagnosed with DBTuna.
- AppDynamics are the first APM provider to dynamically scale applications in cloud, virtual, and physical environments. This is something which has been talked about for many years and is finally becoming a reality.
- AppDynamics have just launched a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) version of their product which is a business model which we already embrace with WebTuna. We are seeing more and more that our customers prefer the benefits SaaS, for example, not having to host and manage the solution themselves and only pay for what they use.
"After trying AppDynamics we immediately saw that we could deploy the solution very quickly without having to go through multiple iterations of testing and refining the instrumentation rules." Mick McGuinness - Senior consultant AP
