How AutoTrader Uses dynaTrace to Improve Application Performance
Learn how the internet's leading auto classifieds marketplace, AutoTrader, used dynaTrace's APM solution to achieve reliable application performance and visibility into their high-traffic production environments.
Environment: AutoTrader's main consumer site supports more than 800,000 unique daily visitors with an inventory of 3 million vehicles. Their Java-based sites are powered by JBoss running on Solaris, with Oracle on the database. LoadRunner is used for load testing.
Problem: AutoTrader was able to generate load tests using LoadRunner, but lacked visibility into the underlying causes of performance problems under load. They needed to manage application performance in production in real-time, at the transaction level, 24x7 with low overhead, but had no system to allow them to do so. Furthermore, AutoTrader wanted to enable each team throughout the lifecyle to easily share information and facilitate issue resolution and prevention.
Solution: After a thorough Proof-of-Concept between dynaTrace, CA Wily Introscope and Compuware Vantage Analyzer, AutoTrader selected dynaTrace Production, Test and Development Editions. Brian Gill, AutoTrader's Manager for Operations Technology said,"We chose to extend dynaTrace into 24x7 production use because it gave us the greatest detail at the lowest overhead. In some cases, other vendors didn't even provide capabilities that dynaTrace provides, so it was superior in many ways."
Results: Gill goes on to say, "dynaTrace gives us really deep coverage, hundreds of methods, at well below 5% of overhead - so low, in fact, we hardly notice it. Before dynaTrace, all the bugs rolled into production, and we had no way to find them. Within a few days of dynaTrace running in production 24x7 we saw things that might have taken weeks or months to figure out."
To get more details on how AutoTrader further leverages dynaTrace to get a 24x7 transaction-level view throughout their entire application lifecycle, check out this case study.
