Swiss Army Chooses dynaTrace to Optimize Performance of Web-Based Applications
Continuous APM Leader helps Command Support Organization automate processes, increase efficiency and improve communication with outsourced application development partners
Boston/Linz – 22 April 2009 – The Swiss Army’s Armed Forces Command Support Organization (AFCSO) has deployed dynaTrace software, the leader in continuous application performance management across the lifecycle for business critical Java and .NET applications, to manage and optimize the performance of the web-based applications it outsources to third-party development organizations.
“Thanks to dynaTrace, communication with our software suppliers is faster and easier,” said Eveline Meyer, Solution Architect at AFCSO. “Now, we no longer need to send any log files back and forth, instead, the dynaTrace PurePath enables us to send suppliers a detailed report which shows exactly where the root cause of the performance problems lies for every slow transaction.”
AFCSO runs a number of custom public service and outreach applications developed by third-party suppliers. These IBM WebSphere-based applications manage millions of documents stored in an Oracle database and are accessed by hundreds of thousands of citizens across Switzerland.
The Swiss Army QA and production teams are responsible for evaluating, accepting, and ultimately managing the applications developed by third parties. Both the testers and the production teams rely on dynaTrace to troubleshoot application performance issues down to code level, helping them break down communication barriers with their suppliers to improve collaboration and increase efficiency.
Prior to selecting dynaTrace, AFCSO lacked visibility into their application environments, so troubleshooting issues with suppliers was a cumbersome, manual process involving numerous time-consuming, back-and-forth conversations to determine what might be going wrong. With dynaTrace’s PurePath technology, AFCSO now automatically captures all relevant information for each individual transaction and sends the root cause analysis directly to the application supplier. This enables the suppliers to rapidly fix the issues and eliminates the slow and inefficient back-and-forth finger pointing and guess-work that characterized earlier attempts to resolve application performance issues.
In one case, performance issues that arose during a migration of an Oracle document management system to WebSphere threatened the application’s rollout when the problems remained unresolved after weeks of investigation. The deployment of dynaTrace quickly pinpointed inefficient code causing the issue and provided clear evidence that certain transactions were degrading performance by making hundreds of redundant SQL calls. dynaTrace enabled AFCSO to automatically capture and document all relevant contextual information, which in turn allowed the application’s developer to swiftly resolve the underlying problem.
About Swiss Army - Armed Forces Command Support Organisation (AFCSO):
The Swiss Armed Forces Command Support Organization (AFCSO) emerged from the former signal corps. Covering a wide range of activities, it delivers basic information for situational awareness to the Commander-in-Chief of the Army and his staff. AFCSO was formed as a federal office in December 2004 by merging the former "Untergruppe Führungsunterstützung" (UGFU) and "Direktion Informatik VBS" (DIK VBS). In addition to its primary tasks, it is responsible for the national disaster management and is the sole provider of information services to the DDPS. AFCSO currently has a staff of approximately 660 in 15 in-country locations. http://www.vtg.admin.ch
About dynaTrace software Inc.
dynaTrace is the leader in continuous application performance management for business-critical Java /.NET applications. Industry leaders such as UBS, LinkedIn, EnerNOC, Fidelity and Thomson Reuters use dynaTrace’s patent-pending PurePath Technology® to trace individual transactions, even in production, and gain true visibility into and across their complex Web services-based applications. dynaTrace enables all lifecycle stakeholders to collaborate – development, QA, and production – to find problems faster and quickly coordinate resolution, dramatically speeding the isolation and resolution of performance problems by 10x – or more.
