Aberdeen Group released their latest report based on a survey of 158 companies during March 2009. The Top Challenges for Application Performance are shown below.


From our experience of our customers challenges we would agree with these findings. The top 3 items I believe are due to the way traditional APM tools work. That is that fact they monitor what is happening on the network and data center and from these measurements they try to infer what experience the customer is seeing. While there are many benefits to monitoring the backend infrastructure, applications and databases, in many cases it is simply not possible to determine what an end users is experiencing.

There are a new generation of technologies from vendors such as Aternity who look at performance from the frontline perspective. By passively monitoring the end-users PC it can get the end users view of performance. By knowing how many and exactly which users are affected IT can quickly asssess the business impact of a particular problem.
